Bean There

Feb 1, 2024

My first planting was the Guatemalan Purple Fava beans from the Seed Bank Collection of the Native Seed Search organization, @nativeseeds.org . I purchased them at the Sunday, Rillito Park-Heirloom Farmers Market here in Tucson. The package weighed 19 grams and contained 16 seeds.

The first 8 seeds were presoaked for a day, starting 12/8/2023, pre-chilled for 3 days in the fridge, and then planted out directly into the ground on 12/11, The first one sprouted on 12/27. On Jan 5,2024 the last of the 8 seeds sprouted.

I then wanted to succession plant, so I started the other 8 seeds. I started the presoak 1/8/24 , did the pre-chill, and planted them into the ground on 1/13. The first of these sprouted 1/22 and by 1/31 all 8 of the second planting sprouted.

During the process I didn't want anything to eat them, so I cut the top and bottom off of regular sized soda bottles and placed them over each seed as soon as it sprouted. When the first sprout came up from batch 2, I then put up small hoops, covered it with camo shade cloth, and held down around the perimeter with rocks.

As of today they all look good.
